CNN Boss Thinks Cable TV is Dead

CNN boss Mark Thompson said something that FTVLive has been saying for years: cable TV is dying.

For years, FTVLive has pointed out that as media companies continue to try and gouge viewers for more retransmission money, they are killing the cable game.

As companies like Nexstar, Tegna, and others continue to demand more money per subscriber, more people will give up and cut the cord. Those companies don’t look at the big picture; they just want to bring in more money right now and keep the shareholders happy.

CNN’s Thompson does see the big picture, and he’s ready to deal with the issue.

He says that CNN will eventually pivot away from cable TV toward a subscription-based streaming model similar to YouTube.

I’m not sure that subscriptions will work for CNN, certainly not in its current form. But streaming supported by advertising will, in my opinion.

I haven’t watched TV in years, but I watch YouTube almost daily. I’m doing that, and I’m not even in the target demo.

Talk to almost anyone who is under 35 years old; they don’t watch TV. They are all watching streaming content.

Thompson also hinted that there will be more cuts at CNN. I can assure you, forget the hints, there will be more cuts at CNN.

As CNN prepares for the future, some of the bigger names from the past will be left behind.

Stay tuned….
