The Inbox on Tegna's New CEO

Journalists give their thoughts on the incoming CEO at Tegna. We thought we would share a few:

Email:

Steib is currently CEO of Artsy, a global online platform for discovering and collecting art, after serving as president and CEO of XO Group, parent company of The Knot. Previously, he spent 10 years in executive positions at NBCUniversal and Google launching, scaling, and acquiring advertising-supported businesses.

Nowhere in there does it prove his passion for local journalism or that he understands it at all.

So it seems likely to me that nothing will change at Tegna. We'll still have to deal when stupid selfies and fluff news output.

Email:

I'd imagine that employees throughout Tegna are on Amazon ordering copies of their incoming CEO Michael Steib's (four and one-half stars) book "The Career Manifesto;"

Here are some key quotes (make of them what you will): "People convince themselves that they will someday take on a new challenge, tolerate a new risk, pursue a dream, but somehow, someday never comes. This book is committed to a different outcome for you. For you, someday is today. Today we are going to take the difficult steps of setting our goals, identifying the new behaviors and habits needed to achieve them, and then immediately committing to the first actions to get started. We are going to perform the quintessential action: we are going to do it.

You deserve an extraordinary career, a meaningful life, fulfillment, and true happiness. You have all of the capabilities to achieve it. You just have to be willing to make the commitment to do the Hard Things. Before you turn the page, I want you to say to yourself, “I want an extraordinary life.”

Now repeat after me: “So I will do the Hard Things.”

Say it again.

All right, let’s get started."

Michael Steib knows nothing about Journalists or Journalism. He will make cuts, set the company up for a sale, and walk away with millions.

The news product will continue to suck.

Mark my words.
