The 2nd Best Person in TV News for 2019

I told you earlier that a second General Manager was going to be on FTVLive’s Best people in TV news for 2019 list and here it is.
The GM that we are talking about is running the how at Scripps owned KMGH.
Dean Littleton is the GM of the station and he is one of the good ones.
He also does something each morning that I used to do when I was a News Director.
When Littleton pulls into the station parking lot, he parks in one of the furthest spots from the building, to save the close spots for the other employees.
When I ran the newsroom in West Palm Beach, the News Director spot was assigned very close to the building. When one of the station’s anchors was pregnant, I told her to park in my spot and I would park far away from the studio.
It’s a little thing, but it shows the staff that you care about them and you don’t think you are all that. I love the fact that Littleton does this as well.
Check where your GM parks in the morning and it tells you a lot about them.
Also, staffers say not only does Littleton park in the far reaches of the station lot, but it is also not uncommon to see him stop and pick up a piece of trash or help someone carry equipment in.
It’s the little things like that the employees notice.
While many GM’s like to lead by fear and secrecy, Dean Littleton holds regular staff meetings to tell everyone what the management team is up to and what's happening in the company.
He doesn't micromanage, he gives feedback, questions if he doesn't understand a decision and then trusts his staff to do the right thing.
What he is not doing is hiring comedians or calling lifestyle shows news. He supports real news and believes that his station has a responsibility to the viewers and the community.
And that lands Dean Littleton in the No. 2 spot on our best list.
