Maybe in the end, Matt Lauer was holding the Today Show back.

Since Lauer was fired 3 weeks ago, NBC's morning talker has been the ratings leader. With Hoda Kobt filling in for Lauer since his firing, Today has beat Good Morning America in total viewers and in the demo. 

You expected that Today's ratings would rise just after Lauer's firing and people tuned into the controversy. But, three weeks later and Today is still on top.
