Bringing Back Sports

Many stations continue to try and put on newscasts while spending as little money as possible.

A number of stations have done away with their Sports Departments, thinking that it was an unnecessary segment in the newscast.

Hearst owned KOAT (Albuquerque, N.M.) shed their sports department 4 years ago.

But now, the station says they are bringing back sports to the station.

The station has hired Ron Burke and Bethany Miller to staff the sports and KOAT’s News Director says it is an important part of the newscast. “Sports is an important component that connects us to New Mexicans. As the pandemic restrictions subside, bringing sports back to KOAT viewers could not come at a better time. We’re really going to dive into telling the stories of the players, the coaches, the teachers, the parents, the volunteers and all of the other people who help to weave New Mexico’s sports community into the rich fabric it is,” said KOAT ND Jess O’Niell.

So, excuse the pun, but, if you’re keeping score, 4 years ago, sports was not worthy of being in the newscast. Now, “Sports is an important component.”

So what changed?

I don’t know about you, but I get the feeling that KOAT is going to soon have a new sports sponsor in their newscast.

Stay tuned…..
