Project Veritas Takes on Tegna

The controversial right-wing outlet Project Veritas is out with an “investigative story” in which they focus on the Tegna TV stations and claim that they are exposing internal Tegna training that is telling staff to “Stop Thinking in Terms of Objective Journalism.”

Their story uses what Project Veritas titles “CBS Insider Brett Mauser” as a big source for their story.

It is here that we should clear some stuff up.

Brett Mauser is not a “CBS Insider”, he is a FORMER Promotions Producer at KENS-TV in San Antonio. KENS is owned by Tegna and is a CBS Affiliate. Mauser is not a CBS employee, nor a CBS insider.

In one sound bite in the Project Veritas, Mauser talks about how he told people that they should not trust the news and when they ask why? He says, “because I work in the news!”

No, Brett, you worked in promotions and that is not news. I spent 20 years working in the newsroom of TV stations and I worked with hundreds of people in promotions. I can tell you that promotions people are news people as much as the salespeople are graphic artists.

There are some eye-opening parts of this video that are a bit unsettling, and most know I am often not a big fan of Tegna’s approach. But, this Project Veritas seems to put all the people working in Tegna in the same boat.

There are still some fine Journalists at Tegna stations. This is another Project Veritas hit piece that once again, misses the mark.
