Twitter Bans Trump
/While many people have been permanently banned on Twitter, no one is more high profile than Donald Trump.
The social media platform has said that they have permanently suspended President Trump's account on Friday following a deadly insurrection at the US Capitol on Wednesday.
Twitter said, "Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open. However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules and cannot use Twitter to incite violence. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement."
Some people are saying it is about damn time.
Trump supporters are up in arms claiming it is censorship.
But here is what you must understand. Twitter is not a media outlet like the TV station your work for, which is governed by the FCC.
Twitter is a business.
KSAZ Anchor Kari Lake posted this after Trump was banned from Twitter.
No, it’s not.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been banned on Twitter before Trump and hundreds of thousands will be banned after Trump.
“But Twitter can’t do that!”
Yes, they can.
They are a business. When you join Twitter you agree to their terms of service. You violate the terms to get kicked off the platform. Simple as that.
Trump has violated the terms of Twitter a number of times, but now finally Twitter has taken some action.
As Kari Lake should know, free speech does not give you the right to walk into a crowded movie theater (remember those days?) and yell “Fire!”
Say you own a donut shop and each day some guy walks Into your donut shop starts ranting and raving and spewing lies and hate.
You, as the owner of the donut shop, have the right to ban that customer.
Donald Trump is that guy in the donut shop.
Just like you and I, Donald Trump has his right to the freedom of speech. Twitter also has the right to stop him from making that speech on their platform. Twitter isn’t telling Donald Trump he can no longer rant and lie, they are telling him he can no longer do that on their platform.
It’s a business.
Past Presidents have used Twitter as a tool to reach the people of this country and try and inform them. Past Presidents have all had the decorum to act respectfully and not like a spoiled child.
Look at the accounts of @BillClinton @BarackObama and the late @GeorgeHWBush and see how a President should act on social media.
The fact that Twitter banned Trump is not the story here, the story is that the President of the United States has gone so far off the rails that Twitter felt the need to ban him.
