When you decide to go into TV news, it’s a good bet that you will be covering a lot of “breaking news”, it sort of comes with the job.

But, it seems that management at Tribunes KDVR/KWGN thinks the staff should start doing some “breaking news drills” just so they are ready.

This is the internal memo that was sent to the staff and obtained by FTVLive:

Subject: COMING SOON: Breaking News Drills

In an effort to keep our skills sharp to jump in to action for Breaking News we will hold a Monthly Breaking News Drill.

The first one will come sometime in the middle of the month.

At any given time I will sound the alarm and we will get ready to be live at the Breaking New Desk through the control room.

I will enlist the help of production, producers, assignment desk, talent and graphics to get us ready to get on the air.

The desk will work with Jen and Michael to simulate mobilizing crews and live equipment

--The Goal—

*To be fast, efficient, informed and ready to deliver critical breaking information to our community.

We are good at what we do and this will ensure we will only get better--

Linda Kicak
Assistant News Director

I’m sorry, but if you are working in a market as big as Denver, i would think you should already be able to cover breaking news without having drills.

But hey, that’s just me….
