It's Not OK...

Word is that a Reporter was pitching a story in the morning meeting at a local Sinclair station.

It was about a woman that had the N-word written on her car. The white Reporter that was pitching the story, used the word in the meeting.

According to a source that was in the room, “There was only one black person in the meeting and after (the Reporter) finished pitching the story and no one said anything that reporter said “we need to make sure we’re saying the N Word” and management said nothing.”

You would have thought that someone from management would have chimed in and said something like, “we never use the full slur, whether it’s on air or in the station.” But word is that did not happen.

“This is a real situation that happened and with 3 managers in the room no one stood up and said anything,” said the source that was in the room.

This is also the problem with Sinclair and other media groups that do not work hard enough on finding people of color and place them in management roles.

This is a huge problem in TV news, from the tiny local station all the way up to the network level. Too often, you look into the News Director's office and you see a middle age (or older) white guy sitting behind the desk. In the rare instances that a woman is sitting there, it is also a very good bet that she is also white.

TV news needs to put more women and a lot MORE minorities in management positions. This has been an ongoing problem that groups continue to sweep under the rug.

Also, it is NEVER ok to use the N-word in it’s full context in a newsroom or on the air.

The managers at this Sinclair station should have made that clear, the second it came out of the Reporter’s mouth.
