The Future of the Morning Meeting?
/No matter if you work in a small market or the network, it is a good bet that your day in the newsroom starts off with a morning meeting.
The morning meeting is where Reporters and if the station is smart Photographers gather to pitch story ideas for news that should be covered that day.
Over the years, I can’t even guess how many of those meetings I sat in?
But, one station group is experimenting with getting rid of the morning meeting.
Sources tell us that the group is looking at doing away with the editorial meetings. Instead, Reporters are told to email their pitches the night before and then, just the managers meet and assign stories.
We don’t think this is a very good idea. First off, the idea that you are pitching news for the next day means that the news is not new. Second, often times, story ideas get fleshed out with a back and forth between Reporters and managers.
It also gives the chance for everyone to get to know people more and interact with them.
I am the first to say that I hate meetings and all for having less meetings at the station.
But, the morning editorial meeting is one that should take place.
Just saying…
