Gannett to Pull the Plug on Texas News Channel

16 years after launching, Texas Cable News (TXCN) is shutting down operations.

The round the clock news station will cease operations on April 1.

The decision to discontinue the cable channel was made during meetings between TXCN owner Gannett Co. Inc. and various cable outlets.

The channel launched with great fanfare in 1999, but by 2004, cutbacks had knocked TXCN in not much more than a replay service. The channel aired replays news broadcasts from Gannett's network of Texas TV stations, including WFAA in Dallas-Fort Worth; KHOU in Houston; KVUE in Austin; and KENS in San Antonio.

The station did offer weather updates and some original sports show, but those are going away when the channel dies.
