Leaving the Business

You can stick a fork in longtime KPRC (Houston) Reporter Mary Benton.

She's done.

Benton said on Wednesday she will leave the station to take a position in media relations and public affairs with an undisclosed company.

Benton has been at KPRC since 1994, said her final day with the station will be July 11.

She declined to discuss her new job because her hiring has not been announced yet by her new employer.

Benton said it "was the right decision at the right time for a number of reasons" to leave TV news.

"It's been a fascinating ride to be on television in a large market like Houston, to have the opportunity to meet people from all walks and have them trust you with information and their stories. I'm going to miss that," she said.

"I've always wanted to be a reporter. I wanted to tell stories and get it right, and I tried to be a voice in our news meetings for people and topics that were often overlooked."
