Anderson Cooper's Stalker not Mentally Fit to Stand Trial
/The man that stalked CNN Anchor Anderson Cooper was reduced to tears in a New York courtroom.
A judge told him he was found unfit to stand trial by court doctors.
The NY Daily News reports that Alex Hausner, 38, was crying in the courtroom where he heard the results, as his mother, who said he desperately needs help, sat in the gallery.
"Doctors have found you not competent to proceed and if those results are confirmed you'll be committed .. to the Department of Heath and Mental Hygiene," said Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon, who gave prosecutors until Oct. 1 to accept or challenge the findings.
Hausner was led into the courtroom in handcuffs and a plaid flannel shirt. The shaggy-haired defendant immediately turned to look for his mother, who was seated in the second row.
"Where is my mother?" he muttered through tears as he sat at the defense table.
After, Lori Hausner, 62, said her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 12 but is not violent and believes he was commissioned to protect the popular CNN anchor.
The problems have manifested into a fixation on the journalist, who Alex Hausner believes has talked to him through TV.
"He's got these psychiatric problems. He believes people are telling him to protect Anderson because people are after Anderson," she said of her son’s obsession.
The concerned mom said he's non-violent and is "more of a danger to himself" than others "because he gets himself into these things."
He's anxious to leave jail and be admitted to a hospital. He has been held at Rikers Island without bail.
"He needs help and being in jail is not going to help him," she said.
Alex Hausner unleashed a crazed campaign against Cooper and boyfriend Benjamin Maisani, contacting them repeatedly between January 1 and June 30. He was arrested July 27 and charged with menacing, stalking, harassment and aggravated harassment.
Prosecutors say he even got into the pair's swanky building and banged on their apartment door with his foot. "I swear to f---ing God don't insult me, I'm going to f--- you up," he allegedly said.
