Is Tegna Trying to Skirt the Law?
/There have been a number of people cut from Tegna, but it seems like it is a handful there and a handful there. And, there might be a reason for that.
An insider says that it appears as if Tegna is no longer going to provide 60 days of notice for layoffs as was seen last year. In their words, they have "adapted" layoff notices, according to the source.
Of course, the company could be treading a very thin line. Layoff notices that have more than a certain amount of people lose their jobs must be met with a public announcement (this is a law, called the WARN Act).
Some think Tegna is trying to skirt the law by doing more, smaller layoffs, as we've seen recently at stations who are laying off their entire field photographer department.
If they keep the numbers low enough, no need to provide 60 days notice.
Of course, the Department of Labor might see this a bit differently, if they can show that Tegna intended to stagger layoffs by a few weeks and keep the staggered numbers low enough to not report them.
If the cumulative numbers still add up, there could be legal action taken against Tegna.
As we have said more than a few times, it appears that Tegna is setting the company up for a sale, once the FCC relaxes ownership rules.
Stay tuned….
