Tegna to Part Ways with Texas News Director

FTVLive FIRST tol you on Friday, that Tegna’s KHOU (Houston) was going to be parting ways with News Director Liz Roldan.

Roldan spent under 4 years at KHOU, coming from WFOR (Miami), where she was the ND for nearly a decade.

Here’s the memo she sent to the staff about her departure. It reads more like a letter to any future stations that might want to hire her.

KHOU 11 colleagues –

I will be leaving KHOU 11 and TEGNA on Friday, October 4th.

Many of you may not know this, but I grew up in Houston, and KHOU was the first TV station I ever visited as a child. I still remember meeting Bill Balleza and being in awe of it all. Coming back “home” after 30 years was something I never imagined, and it’s been a ride every day since.

It has been a great honor to lead the KHOU 11 newsroom for almost four years, but the real joy has been working with each of you to strive for excellence in the city we love.

Some of our accomplishments include:
        •       Winning two National Edward R. Murrow Awards this year, and a Gracie Award in 2021, testaments to our journalistic excellence.
        •       Receiving the IRE Award, and the Frank A. Blethen Award for Local Accountability Reporting for our investigative work on Coffee City, reflecting our commitment to uncovering truth.
        •       Honoring Houston’s rich diversity with live bilingual severe weather coverage, led by Kim Castro, and becoming a truly bilingual newsroom, both in front of and behind the camera.
        •       Leading “the best hurricane coverage the company has ever seen”, as praised by COO Lynn Beall and Ellen Crooke.
        •       Finalizing the strategic content plan for 2025, positioning KHOU for continued success in the future.
These accomplishments are more than just awards—they reflect our collective passion, dedication, and belief in serving the people of Houston.

I’ve had the privilege of hiring a diverse team that mirrors our community, and I’m incredibly proud of the voices we’ve brought into the newsroom. From making sure the “M” in Shern-Min is properly capitalized to ensuring the ñ is on air for Ron Treviño’s name, we’ve set a high standard that will continue to inspire.

To each of you, thank you for your hard work and unwavering commitment. It’s been an unforgettable journey, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to lead such an exceptional team.
