Carolina Anchor Battling Cancer

Donna Gregory, a veteran journalist and anchor at WWAY (Wilmington), is facing a significant health battle after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer earlier this year. Gregory, who joined the WWAY team in 2019, has been a trusted presence on both the evening news and Good Morning Carolina. Her diagnosis came in April after months of persistent symptoms, including a persistent cough. Despite never smoking or being knowingly exposed to radon, Gregory is now navigating the complexities of cancer treatment.

Initially, her treatment plan involved both chemotherapy and immunotherapy, but complications quickly arose. Gregory discovered she is one of the few who do not respond well to immunotherapy, leading to severe breathing difficulties and pain. As a result, her doctors have adjusted her treatment, removing immunotherapy in favor of additional chemotherapy. However, this shift has presented new challenges, such as managing her heart rate during everyday activities.

Despite the difficulties, Gregory has found some relief through Novant’s cardio-oncology rehab program, which helps her cope with the physical demands of her condition. Her family and friends have rallied around her, offering support during this challenging time. Gregory acknowledges that while the chances of the cancer going away are slim, people do manage it and live long lives.

Regarding her return to the anchor desk, Gregory remains hopeful but realistic about the uncertainties of her health. She continues to draw strength from the support she receives from viewers and the beauty of her community, which gives her hope for the future.
