New Boss Hired at ABC O&Os

staff at the ABC O&Os received an internal memo from O&O President Chad Matthews.

The email informed them that ABC has hired a wew Director of Data Journalism.

Ryann Grochowski Jones (no relation) joins the team on April 1st and will work out of KGO in San Francisco.

Hello all,

I am pleased to announce our new Director of Data Journalism, Ryann Grochowski Jones.

Ryann comes to OTV from ProPublica, the independent non-profit newsroom known for its strong and award-winning investigative journalism across the country. Ryann has been the Data Editor at ProPublica for the past seven years, where she grew the data team from two to a staff of ten. She oversaw all of ProPublica’s data journalism efforts in the national newsroom and regional news outlets.   

Ryann was also a data reporter at ProPublica before becoming editor. Before that, she led Investigative Newsource’s data-driven watchdog efforts and worked on print, radio, and television reports at KPBS, San Diego’s NPR affiliate.  

Ryann received her master’s degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, where she was a data librarian for Investigative Reporters and Editors/National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting. She started her career as a municipal beat reporter for her hometown newspaper in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

She is the recipient of multiple awards for her investigative and data work, including the Nina Mason Pulliam Award for Outstanding Environmental Reporting from the Society of Environmental Journalists and an award from Investigative Reporters and Editors for a report called “Money, Transit, Power.”

Ryann joins our great team of data journalists who have been producing excellent work at each of our stations and collaborating daily with our newsrooms. Ryann lives in NYC with her husband and two children and will work out of WABC starting April 1, and reporting to Tom Cibrowski who oversees our data journalism reporting.
