It's True....BUT
/WKYC (Cleveland) Senior Health Correspondent Monica Robins has been in the business for decades.
FTVLive has been telling you about many on-air people leaving the Tegna station.
After a number of recent departures, Robins took to Facebook to post about how the business has changed.
Take a look at her post, FTVLive will have some comments on the backside.
What Robins posted, for the most part was dead on.
But, what she didn’t do, was address the elephant in the room.
I don’t blame Robins, since she is still employed by Tegna and WKYC, but let’s take her employer as an example.
Robins writes, “What’s different is that people don’t stay in this industry as long as they used to do. A ten year TV career is incredibly long.” That’s true, but why is that? Because Tegna (and others) pay shit money and people realize that they are being asked to do more, but are not compensated for the job. Treat people better, pay them a decent salary and you wouldn’t see the massive turnover.
Robins posts, “Local news isn’t as relevant because you can get your news from so many other sources.” Again, that’s true, but maybe if Tegna did quality journalism and not turn out crap, WKYC could be THE viewers’ source for news.
Robins: “It’s a mammoth task with a much smaller staff than we had ten years ago.” Yep, because Tegna wants to pocket more money, and journalism suffers greatly.
Robins writes, “We’re recruiting younger talent, often with less experience, and contracts are only two years.”
Again this is cheap ass Tegna that doesn’t care if a Reporter is nowhere near ready to work in the Cleveland market. If they’re young and cheap, they’re hired.
Robins’ post was good, but the truth is if she worked for an employer that wasn’t so cheap and gave a shit about journalism, she never would have had to write such a post.
Just saying…
