Tegna’s WGRZ (Buffalo) longtime Sports Director Adam Benigni is giving up his role as Sports Director and anchoring the sportscast, but he’s not leaving the station.

Benigni will stay on to host of the weekly program he created called “Sports Talk Live.”

The station says that Benigni was looking to make this move earlier, but the NFL season was just getting started. Benigni said he signed a six-month contract extension in August to finish the Buffalo Bills season.

He now says he is immediately ending his weekday anchor duties. However, he added there is flexibility for him to be involved on big story days, such as the NHL trade deadlines and the NFL draft, and to anchor occasional shows.

“This was not about money,” Benigni said. “That was never a contested issue in the contract.”

Benigni says that his semi-retirement from the Tegna station gives him “the time and flexibility” to explore other opportunities.

The station is now searching for a new Sports Director.
