Former Anchor Wins Primary

Former KWCH (Wichita) Anchor Lily Wu was the leading vote-getter in the primary for the next Mayor of Wichita.

Wu pulled in 11,763 votes, while incumbent Mayor Brandon Whipple was next with 9,253.

Wu is now looking forward to the general election in November.

“Today is August 1st. We’re going to start working yet again on August 2nd because I want to bring more of our community together. Those who did not vote for me this time, I hope to earn their vote and I hope to bring the message of building a unified community through a message of ensuring public safety, growing our economy and restoring trust in City Hall,” Wu said.

At his watch party, Whipple thanked his voters and supporters but said the next big challenge will be the general election as he’s facing a candidate who gained a lot of support in the primary and had significant fundraising resources. Wu had the most financial contributions in the Wichita mayoral race, raising about $207,000.

The vote totals were very low, as overall voter turnout was just 15.33%.

Maybe with all the talk about rigged votes and lies about recent elections, voters are just saying “screw it” and are not voting.
