Shot and Killed

“Shot and killed” is a phrase you often hear while watching the newscast. As Journalists, we have likely said that phrase countless times during our careers.

Yesterday, that phrase was said again, but this time it was different.

This time it was a Journalist that was shot and killed while covering a story.

Spectrum News 13 (Orlando) Reporter Dylan Lyons was killed while doing his job. News 13 photojournalist Jesse Walden, who was working with Lyons was critically injured.

Lyons was just getting started in his career. It wasn’t that long ago that he interned at WKMG in Orlando, before landing an on air job at News 13.

Journalists know going into the job that it comes with risks. But, you never really think that as you head out on a story, that this could be the last story you ever cover.

The Orlando Journalism community is hurting, Lyons’ family is devastated. We cover shooting all the time, but when it is one of our own, it is so much different.
