Radio (TV) Silence
/Tuesday morning, FTVLive started chasing the story about WKYC Met Hollie Strano being arrested for DUI.
Here’s the thing: Strano was arrested on Thanksgiving Day after crashing her car into a power pole and having a blood alcohol three times the legal limit in Ohio.
Until FTVLive and other media outlets started looking into the story, WKYC did not cover the story of their anchor’s arrest.
It wasn’t until the Tegna station knew that the story would be going public that they decided to finally cover the news. This was 5 days after she had been arrested.
WKYC posted a dashcam video of Strano driving past a police officer, who turned around and started following Strano. It was then that she crashed her car.
The Tegna station offered little information other than the video. And get this! WKYC decided to make some money off their Anchor’s arrest by tacking an ad on the front of the dashcam video. Are you fucking kidding me?!
It gets worse.
I went to the websites of the other stations in Cleveland and none of them appeared to cover the arrest of Strano.
Strano is a public figure, just like the Mayor or the council members in Cleveland. I wonder if any of them were busted for being highly intoxicated and crashing their car, would get news coverage.
People don’t trust local news and when local news refuses to be transparent, it only adds to that lack of trust.
Shame on WKYC for trying to cover this up, and shame on the other stations for going silent.
The Cleveland viewers deserve better.
