It Comes With The Job

When you work in the public eye, you should expect the public to chime in from time to time.

KAIT (Jonesboro, AR) Meteorologist Aaron Castleberry received a message from a viewer who was commenting on his on-air look.

Castleberry decided to engage the viewer.

Now, I would hope that if you didn’t like the way someone dressed or looked on TV, you would just change the channel and move on. But, often, viewers feel invested in the people they watch on TV. Some look at those people as friends and think it is cool to comment.

How many times have you been watching an awards show and commented on what the people are wearing? It is human nature, but a few take a step further and reach out to the person.

I’m not saying it is right, but the viewer is investing their time watching your product, and some of those people engage.

My advice is to ignore it and move on. If you’re okay with you, why engage? If the person makes a point, then maybe take the criticism to heart. It’s up to you.

Castleberry follows up by posting the exchange and then adding this.

If you’re going to work in TV news, you need to grow a thick skin.

Posting this stuff, looks like you are seeking attention and want people to tell you how great you are.

Don’t play the victim, I can assure you, it looks worse on you than the sweater vest.
