Catching Up with Morgan

I see that the local Rockford newspaper decided to catch up with FTVLive favorite and WGN Meteorologist Morgan Kolkmeyer.

It’s been 5 years since Kolkmeyer signed off at WREX in her hometown of Rockford, Illinois and headed to the Chi-town.

The self-described weather geek made the jump to Chicago and has loved trying to predict the crazy weather in the Windy City.

“I really just love the changes that we see, especially in Chicago by the lake,” Kolkmeyer said. “We have the most dramatic weather changes from one week to the next and I think that’s so much fun. So, I get a big kick out of it.”

In something that you don’t often see in this business of giant egos, Kolkmeyer admits she might have been a bit over her head when she first landed on Chicago TV news. She says she owes a debt of gratitude to former WGN news director Jennifer Lyons, who offered her a job.

“Truthfully, I probably wasn’t good enough and wasn’t ready to be where I’m at,” Kolkmeyer said. “But, she saw something there and knew I could get there so she took a chance on me and, man, do I owe her.”

Since moving to Chicago, Kolkmeyer has gotten married and has had two kids.

She wakes up around 1:30 AM to head to work and only gets about 5 hours of sleep a night. But she isn’t complaining.

“I get to be home with my kids from 9:30 in the morning until bedtime when my husband is home,” she said. “I get to work at a job that I love and get to be home with my kids, and I feel like I’m getting to raise them. I just think it’s ideal that I get to do both.”

With a business full of egos and all about me TV, Morgan Kolkmeyer is a breath of fresh air and gives you hope that this business still has a few good ones left in it.
