Pittsburgh Station Stays Home

The Pittsburgh Penguins lost in the playoffs, and their season is now done.

Insiders at CBS O&O KDKA say that the sports department was told they would not be headed out on the road to cover the team’s away playoff games.

A story posted on the Pens loss to the NY Rangers was posted on the station’s website, but it came from the AP.

A source tells FTVLive that the “news director & general manager announced to sports department that they don’t believe Pittsburgh is a sports town and will no longer travel to cover Penguins game on the road.”

Both the ND and the GM are new to Pittsburgh, and as someone that worked in the market for nearly 5 years, I can assure you that Pittsburgh is a sports town.

Pittsburgh fans travel to away games as much as any fans I have seen, except maybe Buffalo Bills fans.

When a professional sports teams make it to the playoffs, all stations in that team’s market should cover each game personally.

Viewers expect it, and stations should do it.

Period.

Stop looking at saving money and do the job you are expected to do.

Okay, I’m getting off my soapbox now.
