It's about Quantity and Not Quality

This job posting for Gray’s WBRC in Birmingham, Alabama, shows why TV news is having trouble finding quality Journalists and at the same time losing viewers.

It continues as stations try and put on more news with fewer people.

It wasn’t that long ago when also all stations sent out both a Reporter and a Photographer to cover the news. Now, they are asking a single person to do that job.

But, the fact that part of the requirements at MINIMUM is to shoot, write and edit TWO packages In a single shift, shows that it is about quantity and not quality.

Can a person shoot, write and edit two packages a day?

Of course they can.

But, I willing to bet if that person has more time to work on a single package, the story is going to be better quality and likely contain more information for the viewers.

Some packages might take 3 days or more to shoot write and edit.

I think a quota system in TV news of two packages a day MINIMUM is diluting your on-air product.

Just saying….
