Suspended in San Francisco
/It wasn’t that long ago that KTVU anchor Frank Somerville returned from leave that some thought was a suspension.
Somerville went on “indefinite leave” after he was seen on the newscast slurring his words and not making any sense.
Weeks later he returned to the air, but now he is off again, and most believe he has been suspended again. But this time it had nothing to do with slurring words or his on-air performance.
Word is that Somerville got into a heated exchange with a manager over ongoing coverage of the Gabby Petito missing person and homicide case.
After Petito’s body was found, sources say that Somerville wanted to add a brief tagline to the script critiquing the extraordinary media coverage Petito’s story had garnered and showing it is another example of the media’s fixation when the victim is a pretty white woman.
FTVLive brought up this point back on Sept. 21st and since it seems to have become a focus for some in and covering the media.
While we believe the critique is valid, should it be a tagline on a story delivered by what is supposed to be a straight-news Anchor?
Apparently, the management at KTVU doesn’t believe that and it appears that Somerville has now been suspended.
Somerville is the father of a Black adopted daughter and many can understand his frustration in how the media only seems to care about missing person stories, when the person missing is an attractive white female.
But, Somerville is a Journalist and should report the news without bias, and clearly, in this case, he has a bias (not that it isn’t justified).
Insiders at KTVU tell FTVLive that it was Somerville’s reaction to being told that he could not use the tagline that got him suspended and not the tagline himself.
“This disagreement was very heated and very loud,” said one insider to FTVLive.
Some wonder if this isn’t the end of Frank Somerville’s long run at the station? Others say look for him to be back in the next two weeks.
Sommerville has said anything about the incident publically and hasn’t tweeted in the past 6 years.
Stay tuned….
