This person responded to the fact that KOAT is brining back sports to the station’s newscasts and offers some insider insight on the matter.
Greetings from Atlanta,
Just want to say I believe returning sports to your lineup is a very prudent decision. It’s one that should bring multiple benefits to KOAT.
I was hired as sports director in 1974 to replace Jim Boggio. Max Sklower was GM and Miles Resnick news director. After a year I got their permission to leave sports and launch a new segment that I named ON YOUR BEHALF. But I always missed the New Mexico sports scene. After
a few years in Green Bay, Rochester and Cleveland I returned to KOB as sports director where we engaged in lots of productive competitiveness with Channel 7 where Boggio had returned.
Sports really does bring the state together. Here’s a tip about how to enhance those out of Albuquerque reports.
When doing out of town sports in New Mexico’s many small cities and towns I always tried to show a couple of shots of the towns themselves. This way our widely dispersed populous got to see something more from those reports than the inside of a gym or a football field. i believed that by doing that we actually widened our audience to include non-sports fans.
Furthermore, I always used both a short sports related shot and a town shot in the four to eight second teaser for the anchor to read bridging into the commercial block prior to my sports segment. I really think this separated our sports from the run of the mill “this is what Aztec or Reserve has for a football team this year.” And the town appreciated seeing a downtown street scene or a local monument and when we visited those burgs we got very warm receptions from more than just the football or basketball coaches. When setting up the story I’d call the chamber of commerce and ask for a suggestion for a good shot of the town. In the end this alerted a boatload more people that we were going to soon air a story about them. Helped ratings but mostly endeared our sports segment more viewers.
So hats off to y’all. Kick KOB’s butt and I’ll be sure to tune in the next time I’m in Albuquerque!
While doing a story on Chris Cuomo’s attire while covering the building collapse, we said that Fredo looked like a tourist from Nebraska. One FTVLive reader took issue with that line and emailed us.
We responded to the email:
RE: Cuomo and his socks. You say he looks like a tourist from Nebraska? Are you shitting me? Have you been to Nebraska? People from there do not dress like that. Please do NOT insult people from Nebraska like that. Thanks.
This was our response:
I beg to differ.
I lived in Miami and I still vividly remember the folks from Nebraska walking onto South Beach as they were in town to watch the Cornhuskers play in the Orange Bowl. They dressed very much like Cuomo, except the shirt was a Cornhuskers shirt. Also, almost as soon as they walked onto the beach, their wives were pulling them away, due to the fact that many of the women that layout on the beach do so topless.
For us in Florida, watching all this happen, was entertaining to say the least.
