Scripps announced that they are expanding their “Newsy” operation to an over the air outlet and they have also laid out plans to expand it bureaus for Newsy.

The company will be using a number of Scripps stations as bureaus.

This means Newsy will use KNXV/ABC 15 (Phoenix), KMGH/ABC 7, (Denver) WTVF/NewsChannel 5 (Nashville), WFTS/ABC 28 (Tampa), and KTVQ/Q2 (Billings) as bureaus for its news reporting purposes.

The local employees there may be unaware that Scripps has selected their station as a bureau/hub for Newsy.

Scripps says they will hire two people per bureau.

Newsy wants original reporting coming from everywhere, without having to rely on other national media outlets or sending its employees across the country.

Scripps plans for Newsy to launch OTA has a date of October 1st.

Some job positions at Newsy will need to move. This means main live news production operations and shows solely based in Chicago including Morning Rush, The Briefing, and Newsy Tonight will relocate to Atlanta.

In the coming days and weeks, Scripps will reach out to affected employees on an individual basis and explain what the new changes will mean for them. Newsy and Scripps will pay relocation costs for employees that are required to relocate.

Also, Newsy will be hiring new people because of the increase of hours on air due to the upcoming OTA launch. There will be a lot of employees who will be able to work remotely but those decisions will be made on a job-by-job basis.

Scripps says the move is a business decision. Rather than having dispersed locations, they are bringing them together into one place. The Chicago bureau will be used in limited fashion manning for live shots and guests that will appear on other live news hours or programs.
