Tegna’s KXTV (Sacramento) has a job posting for “Race and Culture Content Producer” whatever that is?

Looking at the job description it reads in part:

“The Race and Culture reporting team will guide and produce daily and special coverage in a space that is dynamic and requires closer investigation, relevant interviews, and incisive investigative reports. The main objective is to push the company-wide mission to serve the greater good of our diverse communities, and the station’s “We Stand for You” brand. This includes keeping the public informed, holding the powerful accountable, and giving a voice to the voiceless.”

OK, first off this sounds like job every person that works in the newsroom should be doing.

Shouldn’t a Reporter or Producer conduct “relevant interviews, and incisive investigative reports’?

The posting goes onto say, “The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about past and current news events surrounding race, culture, and social justice issues.”

Don’t you think that should be a job requirement for every Reporter or Producer you hire and not just the “Race and Culture Content Producer”?

It’s like Tegna is trying way too hard to say, “look, we’re not racists!”

I don’t think Tegna should be looking for one person to focus on Race and culture content in the market. I think everyone that helps gather news at the station should be focused on this.

Also, maybe Tegna should be looking to put more people of color in top positions at their stations. Put more POC in the GM’s office, the News Director’s chair and not making up some job title where you will hire a person of color.

I get the idea of the job is to bring more focus to the marginalized communities, but this should be the job of everyone in the newsroom and not just the new Race and Culture Content Producer.
