The On-Going Problem in San Francisco

With the shooting death of a former Police Officer that was hired by KRON to protect the station’s news crews many working in Bay Area newsrooms are wondering what is next?

San Fran newsies say that crew security is problem across the market and not just at KRON.

Some are saying that the fact that someone involved with a TV station was killed was not a question of if, but when.

“Now the reckoning, which highlights a fundamental disconnect between field crews and management at all four stations who remain indoors and cannot possibly appreciate the dangers,” said one Bay Area insider to FTVLive.

Despite having retired police officers accompanying them as guards, field crews often felt unsafe after being subtly pressured to enter difficult neighborhoods where, even if they weren’t attacked, the bad guys cased them, and obviously, as potential targets. Those guards diffuse difficult situations pretty much every every day.

Insiders think there are no longer any “safe-zones” in the market and what happened to the KRON crew can happen anywhere.

After this latest incident, there are those that work in the field that are seriously contemplating resigning from their jobs.

The question is, how do you cover the news, when it is not safe to do so?

Having Reporters sitting in the newsroom going live, or on Zoom from their house is not the way to cover news.

But, how do you fix this ongoing and growing problem?
