The Last of a Generation
/On Sunday, FTVLive told you that WSVN (Miami), WHDH (Boston) owner Ed Ansin had passed away.
Ansin the maverick TV station owner and the last of a generation who would go to work at the station like any other employee.
How many of you can say you see the owner of the TV station working right alongside everyone else?
More importantly, how many of you can say that the owner of the station’s highest priority was the news department?
For Ed Ansin it was about covering the story, providing the people and the resources needed to cover that story, and to do so as fairly as possible.
When WSVN lost its NBC affiliation in the late 80’s many predicted that the station would flounder along, showing old reruns of sitcoms.
But, WSVN thrived with its heavy news, fast-paced approach that was copied by many stations coast to coast.
In 1993, Ansin bought WHDH in his hometown of Boston, and again his emphasis was on news.
When WHDH lost its NBC affiliation back in 2017, Ansin once again poured money into the station and its news department.
On Friday, Ed Ansin was at work at WSVN. just like he was each day.
This weekend, Ansin passed away and for the first time memory, Ed will not be at work in his office today.
That absence will be felt by the employees that worked for him and by the TV industry as a whole.
Ed Ansin was the owner you wanted and he will be greatly missed.
