Twitter Hack Silences the Blue Checkmarks

A number of big names got hacked on Twitter yesterday and it all seemed to happen at the same time.

I saw a tweet from Elon Musk that said if you sent him $1000 in bitcoin, he would send you $2000 back.

It was then learned that Bill Gates, Barack Obama, and other accounts were posting similar messages.

The hack was targeting verified accounts and it took Twitter quite a while to stop the fake messages from being posted.

At one point, the social media giant locked out all verified accounts and stopped them from posting.

That action left many in the media and stations with no ability to post content. Some stations were having their unverified employees’ tweet so the station retweet them.

It showed just a small example as to why TV stations should not rely so much on social media.

This time, the hack was a bitcoin scam, but what happens the next time? What if the message is much different and what if it happens on Election Day?

Food for thought.
