Nexstar’s KLAS (Las Vegas) reported that a US Marshall was killed after being shot during protests in Sin City.

The station quickly reported the news on social media and on its website.

The problem? it wasn’t true and KLAS deleted the story as if it never happened.

Before you report the death of an officer, it might be best to make sure that you have confirmed this information. Tensions and running very high and inaccurate information like is clearly not helping.

That being said, mistakes happen and it is there that you should step up and admit that you made one and correct. Posting tweets and stories and then deleting them, with no acknowledgment of your mistake, only compounds the problem.

This is the time for the media to be on point, confirm and confirm again before reporting big stories like this, and IF you make a mistake, own up to it and don’t act like it never happened.
