Could the Virus Impact the TV News Conventions This Year?

Last year, FTVLive went to the AAJA convention in Atlanta, NABJ in Miami and RTDNA/NAHJ convention in San Antonio.

This year, AAJA, NABJ, NAHJ and the RTDNA are planning on holding their conferences in the Washington, DC area.

It seems there is already some buzz as to whether or not the conferences will be held with the coronavirus?

Of course, many think that the virus will have run its course by the time the conventions roll around and it will have no impact.

But, FTVLive talked to a number of people that are delaying their registering for the conferences and the booking of their travel plans.

When the terrorist attacks happened on September 11, 2001, the then RTNDA (now RTDNA) had their convention planned for Tennessee just a couple of weeks later.

The group ended up canceling the conference and it had to refund thousands of dollars to those that planned on attending.

The canceled conference took its toll on RTNDA and it still have never fully recovered and their convention has never come close to being like it was before the attacks.

All these groups rely on the conferences and conventions for a big portion of their operating expenses. If they are canceled or could have a big impact on each organization.

Like we said, most believe and are hoping that the coronavirus will be long gone by then, but FTVLive and others are not booking any travel plans just yet.

By the way, the National Association of Broadcasters is having their convention in Las Vegas next month and so far they have not canceled it.

FTVLive will definitely NOT be going to that one.

Stay tuned…
