The Inbox... Plus a Response
/FTVLive’s new feature The Inbox is a chance for people in TV news to sound off, vent or give their thoughts.
Today’s edition of The Inbox is going to be a little different because I feel a need to respond.
Yesterday, FTVLive did a story about KUTV (Salt Lake City) Anchor Shauna Lake being officially charged with DUI after her arrest. This is the second time that Lake was busted for DUI. She was arrested back in 2017 and plead guilty to those charges.
An FTVLive reader sent along this email after our story was posted:
Scott:
Shauna Lake has a problem.
She has a very big problem and does not seem to be getting the help she desperately needs. She is one of the hundreds of thousands (a fair amount in media, as I'm sure you know) suffering from what is a disease.
She needs help.
What she does NOT need is a column item which was just plain smarmy about her 2nd DUI arrest. Mention it? Sure, But your approach was wrong.
You often call out TV stations, management, and reporters (like the "Barbershop idiot") for clueless or bad behavior. And you're usually correct. In this case, YOU deserve the smack.
Maybe now this woman will finally start to straighten out her life.
We ALL should hope she does.
There are parts with this email I agree with. It appears that Shauna Lake does have a problem and I very much hope she gets the help that she apparently needs and straightens up her life.
But, the minute Lake lost any sympathy from me was the minute she got behind the wheel of a car and drove.. You see, I had a cousin named Valerie that I loved and adored. I never will forget my Mom answering the phone and my Uncle was on the other end saying that Valerie was hit and killed by a drunk driver.
Both Valerie and I loved to ski and she was coming back from a day on the mountains when the car she was in was hit by a drunk driver and killed.
Shauna Lake has now been arrested twice for driving while drunk. Those are two times that she was caught. How many times do you think she did this without being stopped by the police.
Lake pleaded guilty after her first arrest and promised to do better. She has not. She got a second chance. Sadly my cousin did not get another chance. She was killed and the guy that killed her was not.
If Shauna Lake is suffering from the disease, she should get the help that she needs. But, if she wants to continue to drink, I’m not here to tell her she can’t or shouldn’t, that is a choice she needs to make.
But, she does NOT need to get behind the wheel and endanger the lives of others.
I’m sorry, but if you drink and drive, you deserve everything coming your way and if that includes getting called out on this website then so be it.
I will not “go easy” on someone that puts the lives of others in danger.
Valerie didn’t deserve to die because some drunk thought it was ok to get behind the wheel.
