Now a Message From Our General Manager

I don’t hate it, but I have never been a big fan of TV General Managers going on air and giving commentaries.

First off, the GM’s that I have seen that do this, seem to obsess over their commentary and I think it takes away from other issues that they can be focused on at the station.

Hearst likes to encourage their GM’s to talk to the viewers through commentaries.

WJCL (Savanah) GM Ben Hart is doing that, and in a recent commentary, he urged Americans to come together after the divisive presidential election.

I think many agree with that thought, but I also believe that with the current political system in place and this is a bit of a pipe dream.

“You and I are a part of the most glorious country in the world,” Hart said in the one about coming together. “Free and fair elections are the key to what makes us the best country on earth. Now that we’ve all had our say, it's time for us to listen to each other, work together and move forward.”

But wait, isn’t the current President telling us that the election was rigged?

Also, hundreds of thousands of people are dead, millions have been infected and millions more are out of a job and it has been 8 months since the coronavirus stimulus relief checks were first sent out. Saying we are the “ most glorious country in the world,” sounds great, but current conditions would tell a different story.

Hart, who succeeded Tim Morrissey atop WJCL, said the editorials “articulate who we are as a station and a company.”

Hart hopes to make them a weekly thing when he knows the market better. For now, he steps up when he feels he can add an informed voice to the dialogue. “When there’s something important to say, it’s time to say something,” Hart said.

I applaud him for his optimism, but I’m still not a fan of GM’s doing commentaries.

But hey, that’s just me.
