Stumbling Out of The Blocks
/When The Firm’s WTTG (DC) announced that they were starting a 4PM newscast, they took a big shot at crosstown rival WRC, which has already been doing a 4PM show.
WTTG ran a promo saying that “4 gets owned by Fox 5.”
WTTG News Director Paul McGonagle went bank to the 1970’s to send out this tweet about the new show. No one under 45 years old likely got what he was saying, but it was a play off the 1970’s TV show the $6 Million Dollar Man:
FTVLive was the FIRST (by months) to tell you that WTTG had hired Angie Goff from WRC to front the new newscast.
So, with all the swagger and bold predictions, you expected this show to be awesome.
So what happened?
Yesterday, WTTG got exactly what they wanted. Nasty weather moved through the area, so the station was assured a big audience for their new show. But, it might have been better if fewer people say it.
The show stumbled out of the blocks with technical problems.
They started off with the weather and Meteorologist Caitlin Roth’s mic was not working.
At one point, the newscast was tossing to two reporters covering the storm. Anchor Blake McCoy tossed to one Reporter, but they took the other one. That Reporter was Anjali Hemphill and the station misspelled their own Reporter’s name on air.
It wasn’t the worst show ever, but for all the bragging from station management, you sure expected better than this.
We have a feeling that WRC News Director Mike Goldrick' was tuned in and had a big smile on his face. If you’re going to “own” his station, WTTG better step up their game.
Just saying….
