Tegna’s WKYC (Cleveland) announced that former ESPN Sports Anchor Jay Crawford is joining the station in the Fall and will also help launch a new %PM newscast in 2020.

You can expect a lot of stations to be tacking on more news in 2020 as the political ads dollars will be rolling in and making them rich.

As for Crawford, he previously anchored ESPN’s SportsCenter, hosted the Little League World Series and was a guest host on NFL Live.

He says it was always a goal of his to work in the Cleveland market (wait! really?)

“When I began my TV career it was always my goal to one day work in the Cleveland market,” Crawford said. “After 15 years of living in the northeast and covering sports at the network level, I am absolutely thrilled to be coming home to work in and cover the community I love. I anxiously await launching the latest phase of my career at WKYC-TV and expanding my broadcasting and digital experience into the fast-paced world of news.”

It should also be pointed out that Cleveland may hold a record for having the most number of former sports anchors sitting in the news chair.

Former sports anchors sitting in the main chair at WKYC: Jim Donovan is the main sports anchors who fills in as a news anchor. Dave Chudowsky is a former sports anchor who now does the morning show. Newcomer Jay Crawford has anchored sports and will now head the new 5 p.m. newscast.

At WEWS, main anchor Rob Powers was the main sports anchor at WABC before going to Cleveland two years ago.
