The Death of Local Cable News

When Nexstar pulls the plug on CLTV news in Chicago in a couple of weeks, it will be another nail in the coffin of local cable news operations.

CLTV going under will mark yet another demise since the late 80s and early-mid 90s.

Some of those that have died are Orange County News, Bay TV (SF), Ohio News Network and Northwest Cable News in Seattle and FIOS News.

Among the current survivors, News 12 Long Island and its other channels, Newschannel 8 in DC. merged with WJLA under Sinclair, New York One and its various locations, NECN in Boston with the NBC conglomerate smothering it, Bay News 9 and Central Florida 13, both in Florida.

They were all among the early adapters...but time and changing media have taken their toll.

The next frontier seems to be digital and many stations are putting their resources in that basket.

You have to wonder, will digital face the same fate as regional cable news in the next 30 years?

Stay tuned…
