We Call Bullshit on Facebook
/Anyone that reads FTVLive knows that we are not exactly a fan of Facebook.
The company has big problems with privacy and is all about making money.
Even if that means selling ads that are untruthful.
Former NBC/CNN Anchor Campbell Brown took to Facebook (Go figure) to make excuses for Facebook being able to let politicians say whatever they want in their ads posted on the platform:
Let’s dissect her statement a bit.
First off, the press is not getting the chance to dissect the ads that Facebook is placing, because the ads are being posted straight to Facebook. Nobody in the press can fact-check secret ads shown to very targeted groups.
Facebook is not like TV, where everyone can see the same ad and can complain. On FB, it plays to the echo chamber. Basically the ads posted on Facebook can be targeted misinformation campaigns to a select audience.
Brown knows this but tries to deflect.
Also, I would think that more than just “Tech Engineers” would see the ads before they were posted to Facebook.
Facebook makes billions of dollars, I’m sure they can hire a person/people responsible for reviewing ad material and making sure it adheres to a specific set of agreed-upon standards and criteria for truth, fairness and societal propriety.
Also, congrats to Campbell Brown after washing up as a TV Anchor and finding a new job. All it cost her was selling her soul to Mark Zuckerberg.
