Buffalo Stations in Pissing Match Over Billboards

The GM at Nextsar owned WIVB (Buffalo) is mad at the GM of Tegna owned WGRZ over a billboard.

It seems that WGRZ has a billboard sign that says that WGRZ is "WNY's (Western New York) News Leader: WGRZ on Your Side."

This has WIVB General Manager Dominic Mancuso's panties in a bunch.

He says that the tagline "WNY's News Leader" is one that his station has been using for years.

"Some would say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but to co-opt your competitor’s well-known tag line that has been part of our on-air open for years?” Mancuso questioned in an email to the Buffalo News.

WGRZ General Manager Jim Toellner saw something different than flattery. "He/they must be going for irony with that complaint," he wrote in an email. "We say it because it is true. Had no idea they consider it one of their 'slogans."

In April ratings, WGRZ did beat WIVB in most newscasts, so what they say is in fact true.

After the Buffalo News posted the story online, WIVB's Mancuso hopped on and commented on the story:

It must be nice that a GM has enough time to troll the internet.

Just saying...
