Tegna has come up with a new job position.
The new job is is a "Producer-in-Residence" program and here's how it works.
The company will hire you at a low salary and then send you to KUSA in Denver for one week of "Producer boot camp."
Then when your week is up, Tegna will send you to one of their 3 worst stations for 2 years.
In the job listing, Tegna states, "It will involve a one-week producer boot camp at KUSA (Denver), where you’ll learn from the best news show producers in the industry, and then a 2-year full-time placement as a producer at WXIA (Atlanta), KXTV (Sacramento), or WTSP (Tampa)."
Now, first of all, if I was a current Producer at WXIA, KXTV or WTSP, I would take this as a major slap in the face. Obviously the company doesn't feel that you are worthy or good enough to train a fresh face kid out of college. These kids must be sent to Denver to learn the job correctly.
Ouch!
Also, the thought that some low paid kid could be brought in to take your job also does not show much confidence from the company.
"As a producer at WXIA, KXTV, or WTSP, you and your counterpart from the program will co-produce a daily news show that you two design, write and roll out," The job ad says. Tegna then adds, "This IS a full-time job (NOT an internship). It will involve a 2-year contract, and it comes with full-time pay and eligibility for benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401K)."
So remember, it's not an internship, even though you will be paid like one.
