WSB in Atlanta sent out a press release claiming that they are now the most followed TV station on Twitter, after they cracked 1 million followers.
The other TV blogs regurgitated the WSB press release and reported the news as fact.
“To reach one million Twitter followers is a remarkable milestone,” said Misti Turnbull, News Director for Channel 2 Action News. “Twitter confirmed that no other local TV station in the nation has this many.
Well Twitter audit confirms that almost half of the WSB followers are fake.
Twitter audit says that 464,092 followers of WSB in Atlanta are not real.
If you do some research, some fake followers can actually be real people that are not active on Twitter and don't post. Those people are often considered "fake" by Twitter Audit. But, it would be hard to believe that almost a half million of those people are following WSB.
FTVLive caught WPLG in Miami buying fake followers and they admitted so, saying that they only did it for a news story. After the Miami station did the story, they claimed that they would be deleting the fake followers, but never did.
Now, we're not saying that WSB went out and bought fake followers like WPLG did, but it seems someone might have.
That's another problem with Twitter, anyone can buy followers for anyone else's account. There is no way to stop it.
Maybe an over eager WSB staffer decided to help pad the station's account?
No one knows, but maybe WSB should have held off on the press release until they could confirm that at least one million of their followers are real.
Then again, with the other guys just puking up the press releases sent them like it's fact, maybe WSB was smart in making a claim that appears to not be true.
