Media Debate Naming the Shooter

Whenever a mass shooting happens, the latest trend in the media is for news organizations to not name the shooter.

They say it gives the guy (because it is almost always a guy) the recognition he was craving.

CNN's Ander Cooper always like to make a big deal over the fact that he is not using the shooter's name.

Which is wrong.

Journalism is about the Who? What? Where? When? And Why?

If you leave out the "who?" the other W's don't really matter. It is your job to inform the public about the story. Not naming the shooter does nothing more than look like a grandstanding move to bring attention to yourself.

"Don't focus your attention on the shooter, focus it on ME, the Reporter that is giving you the story."

As a Journalist, here is what you should do. You should report the full story that includes naming the shooter, the victims and the politicians that take millions of dollars from the NRA to make sure that these shootings keep happening.

Do your job as a Journalist and stop the "we aren't using the shooter's name" bullshit.

The shooter is named Devin Patrick Kelley. He was a punk, a coward, a loser and now he's dead.

How's that for recognition?
