Miami Station Assigns Crew To Cuba
/News out of Cuba is important in South Florida. WPLG-TV has decided to capitalize on that.
Reporter Hatzel Vela and photographer Brian Ely will be the USA's first local reporters stationed in Cuba. The new team is officially supposed to start today, but when the US announced it was ending its policy of allowing the entry of Cuban emigrants who arrive without visas, the team started early.
Interestingly, Vela speaks Spanish, Ely does not, but he's planning to take an immersion course. In a press release, Vela described his photog as, "your average white American" (we have to wonder what would be said if the tables were turned).
