Media Organizations to Lose Views on Facebook
Since day one, FTVLive has never understood why stations and media groups have put so much focus on Facebook.
Stations love to brag about how many Facebook followers they have and will give away stuff to try and get more. Station and networks post content on Facebook and continue to look for ways to get more people to their Facebook page.
Why would you hand over your content and try to build followers on a platform you don't own? Won't it be better to put those resources and money into your own website?
Well now, it appears that Facebook is telling content publishers that they will not be getting as many views as they expect.
Facebook has told stations and networks to: Tamp down your expectations.
The social media company says that it planned to make a series of changes to its news feed algorithm so that it will more favorably promote content posted by the friends and family of users. You know, like Facebook was when it started.
The side effect of those changes, the company said, is that content posted by publishers will show up less prominently in news feeds, resulting in significantly less traffic to the hundreds of news media sites that have come to rely on Facebook.
Maybe now, stations will stop giving away cash and iPads to get Facebook "Likes" and spend more time and money of the stuff that they actually own.
Something that FTVLive has been preaching for years. Not to say we told you so....BUT....
BTW- FTVLive barely uses Facebook. At one point we posted links back to FTVLive stories every single day on Facebook. We then stopped doing that for over 140 days and saw no decrease in traffic to FTVLive.
In fact, we have more traffic and now only post one story a day to Facebook. It's just not worth it.
