Longtime Philly Anchor Signs Off
After 38 years at WPVI in Philly, a longtime Anchor says goodbye.
Yesterday was the last day for WPVI's Lisa Thomas-Laury, as she officially retired from the ABC O&O.
Thomas-Laury has battled health issues while at the station. In 2004, Thomas-Laury health took a sudden turn for the worse. A rare nerve disorder began stealing her ability to walk, and even talk.
Doctors at the Mayo Clinic attacked the disease with a bone marrow transplant. The rehab was grueling. Lisa shared her story with Oprah in 2007.
Lisa returned to reporting, with a focus on people overcoming hardships.
Sadly, last year, the nerve disorder returned with a vengeance. Lisa would undergo a second bone marrow transplant.
Thomas-Laury joined the station 1978, at the age of 24, answering the call to come to WPVI, as a reporter and co-anchor of Action News at noon.
Thomas-Laury reported the stories of everyday people around the region with her extraordinary sense of grace and empathy.
She also interviewed major political figures, from President Ronald Reagan at the White House to a young Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy on Capitol Hill.
She covered royalty, reporting from London on the wedding of Prince Charles to Princess Diana.
Now she is retiring and you know it's a big deal when Oprah spends you well wishes.
