There are a lot of News Directors that like to think they're God. But one former Motown Weatherman is working for the real man upstairs and not just someone that thinks he's him.

Former WDIV Weather Anchor Chuck Gaidica has been appointed senior pastor of Detroit’s Metropolitan United Methodist Church.

The meteorologist stepped down from his job reporting the daily weather for the station in 2014 to become a pastor at Novi’s Oak Pointe Church. In August, he returned to Channel 4 to co-host “Live in the D,” a mid-morning show that highlights positive things happening in the city.

His new position at Metropolitan United Methodist Church will not affect his on-air job with the station, he said.

“I get to do ‘Live in the D’ and serve the D,” Gaidica told The Detroit News. “I’ve had a ministry focus for the other part of my life, and this is an hour-a-day morning show and it’s a positive, upbeat look at Detroit, which is still a good fit. TV management has been behind me 100 percent which is really nice.”

“My wife (Susan Gaidica) is a lifelong United Methodist, we attended Metro where I’m going to be appointed for about 11 years,” he said. “It’s a coming home for us.”

Gaidica will start as senior pastor at the nine-story English Gothic church, which sits at 8000 Woodward, just north of I-94, on July 1. He replaces the Rev. Ray McGee, who Gaidica said gave “his early and strong support.”

The former weatherman said he feels he was “being beckoned back to the city,” and he’s looking forward to bridging divides and encouraging people to serve the community.

“It’s an interesting time in the revitalization of the city, and the church I think is looking for and is anxious for a revival, too,” Gaidica said. “I think it’s a really cool time to be in Detroit, and I’m looking to serve the community.

“How do I encourage others to open the doors of the church and serve those around us? (It will be) a great part of this journey.”
