WDBJ to Fight $325,000 Fine for Airing Porn

The GM of WDBJ in Roanoke says he is not happy that the FCC has fined his station $325,000 for airing porn during the newscast.

As FTVLive told you, the FCC slapped the station with the huge fine "for apparently broadcasting extremely graphic and explicit sexual content, specifically a video image of a hand stroking an erect penis" during a newscast. The images popped up in a story about an "ex-porn star" who had joined a local rescue squad.

WDBJ7's President and General Manager, Jeffrey Marks, issued a statement saying "we are surprised and disappointed that the FCC has decided to propose to fine WDBJ7 for a fleeting image on the very edge of some television screens during a news broadcast."

Marks says the story had gone through review before it aired and inclusion of the image was purely unintentional. He says "The picture in question was small and outside the viewing area of the video editing screen. It was visible only on some televisions for less than three seconds."

So, the FCC fined the station over $100,000 a second for showing the porn.  The station says it oppose the FCC’s proposed sanction.

WDBJ says they have only been fined one other time by the FCC over some children's programing. That fine was not nearly as STIFF as this one.
